mmoexp–Final Ice Shot Reverse Chill Stormweaver PoE Build Explained
This is the final build guide for Ice Shot Reverse Chill Stormweaver—a build that is blazingly fast, deceptively tanky, and extremely punishing if you misunderstand even a single mechanic. When everything is working, you feel immortal. When one interaction is wrong, the build completely falls apart.
This is not a beginner-friendly build. If you don't enjoy reading mechanics, troubleshooting your character, or experimenting with gear and passives, this build is not for you.
Core Mechanic: Reverse Chill
The entire build revolves around Reverse Chill, which comes from the unique chest piece Siern's Inheritance. This item reverses the effect of chill—meaning instead of slowing you down, chill speeds you up.
Important clarification:
Reverse chill does not convert chill into another ailment like ignite. It simply flips the effect.
To make reverse chill reliable, the build uses Shackles of the Wretched, which reflect non-freeze ailments back to you. Every time you chill an enemy, that chill is reflected onto yourself, causing you to become permanently self-chilled—except now that chill gives you massive movement speed.
Ideally, your Shackles also have the modifier:
“You cannot be Shocked for 6 seconds after being Shocked.”
This prevents permanent self-shock, which would otherwise be lethal.
Why Reverse Chill Is So Powerful
With proper scaling, reverse chill can grant:
300%+ movement speed (316% while sprinting in this setup)
~80% damage reduction
The damage reduction comes from Asphyxia's Wrath. Its modifier causes enemies chilled by your hits to take increased damage. Because reverse chill flips this effect on you, you instead take less damage.
The reason the reduction reaches ~82% is because the two 35% chill effects are multiplicative, not additive.
Movement Speed Scaling
Primary movement speed sources include:
35% movement speed on boots
~60% movement speed from the belt
Additional movement speed nodes on the passive tree
One critical interaction to understand is the belt Soul Core Gualites Thesis. Even with Chaos Inoculation (CI) and only 1 life, this belt drains life based on a percentage. Since percentages still apply, sprinting will slowly kill you.
The Fix
You only need one flat life regeneration roll on any piece of gear.
The best place is the amulet implicit, but it can be anywhere. One point of flat regen completely solves the issue.
Things That Will Brick the Build
This build is extremely sensitive. Several things will outright kill you:
1. Fire Damage
If you deal fire damage, reflected ignites will kill you.
You can anoint Crystallised Immunities to fix this, but doing so restricts gearing options.
If you plan to use Headhunter, you must anoint it—but honestly, Headhunter is not recommended unless you're running heavily juiced content like temples. You can steal mods that halve your chill effect, which destroys both your movement speed and damage reduction.
In most cases, Against the Darkness provides more movement speed and all the damage you need.
2. Reduced Effect of Chill / Slow
Self-chill is still technically considered a slow—even though it speeds you up. Any source of reduced slow effect will reduce your movement speed.
This means:
You cannot level with Wanderlust
You cannot use Rite of Passage, Ox Spirit, and similar modifiers
Gear Overview
Outside of the unique interactions, most of your gear looks like a standard attack-based energy shield character. The real challenge comes from the passive tree.
Passive Tree Tech: Squeezing Energy Shield
You lose two major defensive slots:
Body armour
Gloves
To compensate, with POE orbs site, the build uses several advanced passive interactions.
Heroic Tragedy (Timeless Jewel)
A Heroic Tragedy timeless jewel with the Verona modifier transforms a keystone to grant Energy Shield based on Strength. It also replaces notables in its radius.
In this setup, the jewel provides:
~120% increased cold damage
Two notables granting 40% energy shield + lightning resistance
Roughly 1,000 Energy Shield from a single jewel
This jewel is extremely powerful—and extremely annoying to acquire. There is currently no reliable way to preview notables. You must buy and test them manually unless you're wealthy enough to divine-roll your own.
Even without Verona, a jewel with strong notables is still worth using.
From Nothing Jewel
This jewel allows you to skip inefficient travel nodes in an already point-starved tree. The build is incredibly tight on passives, and every saved point matters.
Against the Darkness Jewel
This is another cornerstone of the build.
Ideal mods:
Damage as Extra Cold
Shock Duration
Each notable in its radius now grants damage, resulting in:
5 notables = 20% more damage
The shock duration reduction is crucial. Because shock is reflected to you, you must minimize its duration. Combined with Stronghearted, this setup reduces shock duration to nearly 100%.
In practice, self-shock is never noticeable.
Weapon Sets Explained
Weapon Set 1 – Buff Setup
Wand + Effigy of Cruelty
Used to apply Thunderstorm and shock magnitude buffs
Shock-related passives still apply after swapping back to your bow
Weapon Set 2 – Main Damage
Bow setup with Ice Shot
Uses Rigwald's Ferocity
The Spore gem is functional but not ideal. Rapid Shots may offer better DPS, but the build already has massive attack speed from reverse chill and can struggle with mana.
Mana Management
If you're having mana issues, you have several options:
Use your mana flask (yes, manually)
Take mana efficiency nodes
Temporarily equip a Wastegate Belt, socket Lifetap Spirit into your life flask, then swap back
Yes—it works.
For single-target, Freezing Mark + Arc of Siphoning provides mana leech.
Gems, Budget, and Ascendancy
This build uses several expensive lineage gems. If you're looking for replacements, you will need to experiment. This is not a copy-paste budget build—you must adapt.
Stormweaver is not mandatory, but it is the fastest option because it provides two chills.
Pathfinder is not recommended due to mechanics that directly conflict with the build.
Spirit and Auras
The build currently uses only 100 Spirit, but there are multiple viable setups:
Herald of Ice
Blasphemy + Temporal Chains (excellent defensive layer)
Combat frenzy charge setups for more damage
Blasphemy makes a massive difference in survivability by slowing enemies. Damage options exist, but not getting hit is often better.
Final Thoughts
This build is absurdly fast, surprisingly tanky, with POE currency, and extremely unforgiving. I've covered everything that can brick it—though I may have missed one or two things.
If something breaks, you'll have to do what this build demands of every player:
Put on your big boy pants and figure it out.
Good luck.
