Blood Charges in poe1: A u4gm Analysis
Interest in Reap is picking up again ahead of 3.29, but it is not because the old spell suddenly became an easy all-rounder. Reap of Butchery looks like a different beast. If you are already checking prices for POE currency, it is worth knowing that this version seems built for long fights, not quick screen wipes. You stand close, keep casting, build Blood Charges, and let the physical damage over time do the heavy lifting. That sounds simple. In maps full of fast monsters, it probably will not feel simple at all.
Regular Reap still has the smoother routine. You can place casts more freely, tag packs before they reach you, and get more value from the hit itself. Butchery gives up some of that comfort for a stronger DoT-focused profile. You will notice the difference most on rares and bosses that stay alive long enough for charges and duration to matter. The catch is uptime. A boss that jumps away, covers the floor in damage, or forces repeated movement can wreck the nice-looking numbers. This is not the kind of skill you play half asleep.
Practical comparison for a basic endgame setup
| Trait | Ordinary Reap | Reap of Butchery |
|---|---|---|
| Close-range demand | 4/10 | 9/10 |
| Fast-map comfort | 8/10 | 5/10 |
| Long-fight damage value | 6/10 | 9/10 |
Those numbers are not hidden gem stats. They are the sort of difference players usually feel after a few maps. Butchery may cover a wide circle around your character, yet that does not make it safe. You still need to be near the target, and that changes the passive tree and gear priorities. Recovery matters. Armour, block, spell suppression, physical mitigation, and a decent movement skill all matter. A fragile character can have great PoB damage and still spend half the fight running away. Trickster-style defences may suit players who want recovery and mobility, while block-heavy approaches could make the close-range play feel less punishing.
I would not rush into Reap of Butchery as a blind league starter. The campaign rarely gives enemies enough health for its ramp to shine, and low cast speed can feel rough before your defences come together. It may be better as a map transition once you have levels, recovery, and a few solid physical DoT pieces. For players planning that switch, buying cheap POE currency for the core gear can make the change less awkward, but the build still needs good positioning. Ordinary Reap remains the flexible choice; Butchery is for people who enjoy staying in danger and making every second of uptime count.
