Introduced in 2018, Delve is an infinite, side-scrolling mine that scales in difficulty without limit. Unlike the Atlas of Worlds, which has a fixed set of maps and bosses, Delve continues forever. Monsters become harder. Rewards become better. And players can push deeper than anyone has gone before, competing for ladder position and bragging rights. Delve is not a side activity. It is an alternate endgame.

The mechanics of Delve are unique. Players descend into the Azurite Mine, a dark underground network of tunnels and chambers. The mine is illuminated by a Crawler, a slow-moving vehicle that follows a track. Players must stay within the Crawler’s light; darkness deals rapid damage over time. The Crawler moves when players click on a node. Nodes come in several varieties: azurite nodes for upgrading the Crawler, fossil nodes for crafting materials, and boss nodes for unique rewards. Each node is a small encounter area, usually lasting one to two minutes.

The resource system is the key to Delve’s balance. Sulphite, found in regular maps, fuels the Crawler. Each node requires a certain amount of sulphite to access. Deeper nodes require more sulphite. This system ties Delve to the core Atlas; players cannot Delve exclusively without mapping for sulphite. The sulphite cap is upgradeable using azurite, creating a progression loop. Farm azurite to upgrade capacity. Farm more sulphite to delve deeper. Delve deeper to find better fossils and resonators. Craft better gear to push even deeper.

Fossils and resonators are Delve’s signature rewards. Fossils are crafting items that modify the outcome of a Chaos Orb or Exalted Orb. A fossil might force a specific modifier type, such as “more fire modifiers” or “no physical modifiers.” Resonators hold fossils, allowing players to apply multiple fossils to a single crafting attempt. This system enables deterministic crafting that is impossible with standard currency orbs. A perfect physical weapon requires a combination of Jagged, Serrated, and Corroded fossils. A chaos damage over time build needs Aberrant and Metallic fossils. Delve is the primary source of these items.

The darkness mechanic adds risk. Players can leave the Crawler’s light to explore side passages, finding hidden walls that require dynamite to breach. Behind these walls are fractured walls containing currency chests and hidden fossils. But darkness kills quickly. Players must balance greed against survival. A single misstep into a pack of darkness-infused monsters can end a hardcore character. The tension is palpable.

The Aul boss fight is Delve’s pinnacle. Aul, the Crystal King, spawns only at deep depths and only in specific biomes. His fight features multiple phases, ground-based attacks, and a darkness mechanic that forces players to manage light radius. Defeating Aul drops exclusive unique items and a significant amount of fossils. Finding Aul is a thrill. Beating him is an achievement.

Path of Exile 1’s Delve is not for everyone. The resource grind can feel tedious. The darkness mechanic is punishing. But for players who embrace it, Delve offers something no other content provides: infinite scaling, deterministic crafting, and the simple joy of watching a number tick higher. In Wraeclast, the mine has no bottom. That is the point.
