In my raised beds I use equal parts compost, peat moss,
and vermiculite. The vermiculite breaks up the soil structure keeping it from getting too compacted and provides great drainage. 3 cubic feet of peat moss is not much at all for that size raised bed. New raised bed that is about 4 feet by 6 feet. I used the following for my soil mix: 400 pounds organic topsoil 200 pounds of compost/manure 3.8 cubic feet of compressed peat moss 1.5 cups of a general plant food mix I'm worried I added too much peat moss. So I am considering building a raised bed. I want to do this so that I can mix my own soil. For the same price of topsoil I can get compost. I am tempted to do equal parts of topsoil and compost mixed in with some sphagnum moss (?) and some sand and some bark. The bed will be 23 feet long and 2 foot wide ( I am going to make 3 beds 2 8 footers and one 7 and just put them together to make a 23 It has rained today as well. When I went to go check on the raised bed, I noticed a bunch of little clumps of what looks like and feels like gelatin. The clumps are clear, but kind of muddy from the top soil. It looks they burbled up from out of it. We used a mixture of topsoil and potting mix to fill the beds, and I have never come across this May 31, 2021 · The only trees that seem to grow well in my soil is a Blue Spruce (a beautiful tree but very slow growing), Elm trees that grow like weeds everywhere but look like dead trees 8 months of the year, and Black Locust trees that also grow like weeds, self-seeding themselves everywhere and looking like dead trees 6 months of the year. 1. does that sound totally off? should we be getting some top soil or more potting soil? what is the best soil composition? 2. after we add all the soil and compost, do I need to water the bed before I plant? thanks! In the fall I add an inch or two of compost to each bed and rake it in. Come spring, each time I plant something in a square (my garden is mostly Square Foot Gardening) I add a couple of trowels of compost to the soil and mix it in.
